Wide Receivers

FanSided released its mock draft last week and our friends at Ebony Bird were in charge of making the pick for the Ravens. They went with Treadwell with the sixth pick, a wide receiver that many feel has the potential to be like Dez Bryant. I want to go on the record of saying I find it very unlikely that Baltimore selects a wide receiver in the first round in consecutive years. While Treadwell would certainly be the playmaker that the Ravens need, a defensive player should be their top target in the opening round.

Look for the Ravens to use the second or third round to find another receiver that they hope they can pair with last year’s first-round pick, Breshad Perriman, for years to come. Steve Smith is coming back for one more season so there would be no pressure to get a second or third round choice on the field right away if Perriman is healthy by the start of the season. Here are some players to watch on Saturday when the wide outs take the field.

Doctson is going to be a player that many teams keep an eye on during the combine. He could go anywhere from late in the first round to early in the third. He’s a big target at 6-foot-4, but does need to hit the weight room to add some bulk. He makes tough catches and is difficult to bring down in open space. Where he ends up in the draft could come down to the status of his wrist, which he broke in November.

William Fuller, Notre Dame

The Ravens are lacking speed at wide receiver and Fuller is one of the top speedsters in this draft as he has a good chance to flirt with Chris Johnson‘s 40-yard-dash record of 4.24 seconds. He has a knack for finding the end zone as he scored 29 touchdowns in his final two years with the Fighting Irish. He will have to work on his route running, but his speed will open up the underneath routes when he takes the field.

Tyler Boyd, Pittsburgh

Boyd has a lot of the traits that the NFL is looking for from wide receivers. He is a physical wide out with good hands and the ability to make tough catches in traffic. He runs smooth routes and has the strength to break tackles in the open field. He is not necessarily the quickest player and was arrested for DUI to start the 2015 season which will hurt his draft stock. If the Ravens think he is worth the risk, they could find a No. 1 receiver in the second or third round.
