Maryland Terrapins: Ohio State Pays the Price for Terps Loss to Michigan
By Joe Serpico
The Maryland Terrapins bounced back from the loss to Michigan with a 100-65 throttling of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Ohio State Buckeyes have to be annoyed that their biggest rival upset one of the best teams in the country. They were the ones that paid the price.
The Maryland Terrapins came out angry coming off the loss to Michigan on Tuesday, and handed it to Ohio State with a 100-65. It was the first time the Terps have reached the century mark since a win over University of Maryland – Eastern Shore on Dec. 5, 2012.
Robert Carter and Rasheed Sulaimon were a combined 9-of-10 from three-point range as Carter scored a career-high 25 points and Sulaimon had a season-high 22 points in the rout.
Carter came out red hot, scoring 10 of the first 13 points for the Terps. He did it in a variety of ways as well. He attacked a smaller defender in the post for his first basket, plus drew the foul for the three-point play. He hit a three-pointer from long range for his next basket. Then it was a sweet spin move on a Melo Trimble bounce pass for a layup. And to top it off, he scored on an impressive finger roll under the glass.

The Terps then put their stamp on the game with a 7-0 run late in the first half to stretch the lead to 46-30. Sulaimon found Carter inside for a finish and on the ensuing possession nailed a three as you could feel the Buckeyes starting to realize they were no match for this Maryland team. The nail in the coffin was the last play of the half as Jake Layman stole the ball with under five seconds remaining and found Sulaimon running full steam up the court. Sulaimon was able to get a layup up just before the buzzer. Sulaimon had 13 points, shooting 3-of-4 from three, and Carter scored 15 in the half.
Trimble did not score in the first 20 minutes, but he still made his presence felt with six assists. It did not matter with the 18-point lead at the break as the Terps shot 19-of-30 (63 percent) in the first half, and 7-for-10 from downtown.
Carter opened the second half with a good looking jump hook. On the next possession, Trimble found Stone on a beautiful pass and the freshman converted the layup. It was another Carter three-pointer next, and then Stone dominating on the inside for another basket. Trimble would hit his first shot of the game to give Maryland a 59-33 advantage. The Terps would stretch that lead out to a 42-point advantage with a 20-2 run and Ohio State was showing no fight.
The reserves finished out the final eight minutes of the game, and it took two Jaylen Brantley free throws to reach the 100-point mark. Several players that do not receive much playing time got into the action, including senior Trevor Anzmann and freshmen Kent Auslander and Andrew Terrell.
What makes the win more impressive is that Ohio State is not a team that should be such an easy win. While the Buckeyes are not what they have been in the past, they entered the contest with just one loss in the conference and six on the season. The Buckeyes were never a threat to win the Big Ten Conference this season, but are still a respectable opponent. Maryland made them look like one of the worst teams in the country.

The blowout was exactly what the Terrapins needed to get back on track as the next three games will be much tougher. Next up is a home game with Northwestern, before heading to East Lansing for a huge showdown with Tom Izzo, Denzel Valentine and Michigan State. Maryland will then head back home and take on a very good Iowa team that currently sits atop the Big Ten standings.
The Terps scored 100 points and Trimble only scored eight of them. That is scary for the Big Ten the rest of the way.
