Baltimore Ravens: 2015 Offensive Line Grades
By Joe Serpico
If we are judging Monroe by his play on the field, he actually had a decent season. He finished as the 14th-best left tackle in 2015 by Pro a Football Focus. Taking his contract into account, he played at the level that is expected from the 11th-highest paid player at the position.
The problem was he was rarely on the field in 2015. Monroe finished only three games all season long, battling a variety of injuries before the Ravens ultimately decided to place him on injured reserve on Dec. 12. He suffered a concussion in the Ravens regular season opener and missed the next three games. A shoulder injury would hamper him the rest of the season before Baltimore made the decision to end his season.
The front office has a decision to make with Monroe. If the team decides to move on from Monroe, it leaves them in a bit of a bind. He is due $6.5 million in salary and carries a $8.7 million cap number, both of which are the fourth-highest for the Ravens. Cutting him would free up $2.1 million in cap space, but comes with a dead cap penalty of $6.6 million.
Monroe had never had injury problems prior to signing his extension with Baltimore before the 2014 season. Now the Ravens must decide if he is worth the price tag. This decision could have a lot to say about whether the team has the resources to re-sign Kelechi Osemele.
