Baltimore Ravens: Turnovers the Story in 34-14 Loss to Kansas City Chiefs
By Joe Serpico
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 34-14, giving the Ravens their first season with double-digit losses since 2007.
Jimmy Clausen threw two interceptions and Buck Allen had a costly fumble as the Kansas City Chiefs came to M&T Bank Stadium to give the Baltimore Ravens their 10th loss of the season. It is only the fifth time in franchise history that Baltimore will finish with 10 or more losses.
The Chiefs scored 21 points off Ravens turnovers and scored another touchdown following a horrendous personal foul penalty on Timmy Jernigan as he hit Alex Smith out of bounds. Charcandrick West would score from 38 yards out to give Kansas City an early 7-0 lead.
Allen would then fumble the ball and Chiefs safety Tyvon Branch took it 73 yards for a touchdown to stretch their lead to 14-0 quickly in the first quarter. That would be the end of the day for Allen as he was on the bench the rest of the afternoon in favor of Terrance West and Terrence Magee.
The Ravens would go for a fake punt deep in their own end zone, but punter Sam Koch was not able to pick up the first down. The Chiefs only needed two plays to find the end zone as Smith found Jeremy Maclin in single coverage for a 13-yard touchdown to make it a 21-7 game.
Marc Trestman’s game plan must have been to attack rookie cornerback Marcus Peters, but that proved to be a huge mistake. Peters picked off Clausen twice, including a 90-yard pick-six that would be the last touchdown of the day. Peters intercepted another pass in the fourth, but fell to the ground after clinching the win for Kansas City.
For Baltimore, there was very little to be excited about except the play of wide receiver Kamar Aiken. Aiken was on the receiving end of a Hail Mary play at the end of the first half, scoring on a 48-yard touchdown grab with several Chiefs defenders nearby. Aiken finished with eight receptions for 128 yards, both career highs.
Baltimore did not play their best football to say the least, but once again, remained competitive until the last few minutes when Peters came up with the interception return for a touchdown. The 20-point loss is the second week in which Baltimore lost by double digits after the first 12 games were decided by eight points or less.
If you thought the Ravens play was terrible, you should have seen the gold pants they wore today. In case you missed it, here are the guys rocking those ugly pants that we hopefully never see again.
"What do you think?"
They get a thumbs down from the majority of fans.
If there is something to be happy about in a loss, the win for the Chiefs today cemented their spot in the AFC Wild Card race and leaves the Pittsburgh Steelers still on the outside looking in. The Ravens will host the Steelers next week and a win would likely eliminate Pittsburgh from postseason play.
