Suggs has been an instant force for the Ravens defense since being selected with the 10th pick in the 2003 draft as he tied an NFL record by posting a sack in each of his first four games. He has gone on to become the franchise leader in sacks with 106.5, passing Boulware during the 2011 season in which he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Suggs racked up a career-high 14 sacks during the 2011 campaign to win the defensive MVP. In addition to the number of sacks, he forced seven fumbles, intercepted two passes and accounted for six pass deflections. His performance that season is arguably the best ever for a Raven team that also featured two other former Defensive Players of the Year.
Since Ed Reed and Ray Lewis have left Baltimore, Suggs has taken over as the leader of a defense known for striking fear into their opponents. He has been the mentor for a team that lost two of the greatest to ever play the game and has helped newcomers such as Brandon Williams and C.J. Mosley understand what Ravens football is all about.
His impact on the game has been missed this season as he tore his Achilles’ tendon in the first game against the Denver Broncos. The Ravens haven’t been able to generate consistent pressure without Suggs. At 33 years old, it remains to be seen how much he has in the tank, but there is no doubt that he is the top pass rusher in franchise history.
