Maryland Basketball: Melo Trimble’s Draft Stock is Rising

The sophomore sensation is starting to climb up some NBA draft boards.

Maryland Terrapins point guard Melo Trimble surprised plenty of folks last year as a true freshman. Before this season, he was dubbed as the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. He’s not sneaking up on anyone this go-around, but still, he hasn’t received quite the respect he deserves. However, the way he’s been playing, Trimble is now commanding that respect and rising up the NBA Draft boards in the process.

A little over a week ago, the Terps’ outstanding floor general wasn’t projected to be selected in next year’s NBA Draft until early in the second round. He is currently the 21st best prospect in the draft class, according to DraftExpress. Now, that’s more like it.

The 2015-16 season has been somewhat up-and-down for Trimble, as he has scored in single-figures twice against inferior opponents. But, then he has games like he did against UConn that remind you why so many programs recruited him in the first place.

Against the Huskies, Trimble was aggressive all night long. He kept looking for his shot and he got to the free throw line 15 times, 14 of which he converted on. He also shot 50 percent from the field. When Trimble is firing on all cylinders, Maryland is a pretty difficult team to beat.

It seems as though Trimble has reserved his best games this season for the most challenging opponents and biggest stages. He dropped 24 points in the thrilling victory over Georgetown. Then, he recorded a double-double against North Carolina (23 points, 12 assists). It’s about time we start calling him ‘Big Game Melo.’

It’s quite apparent that Trimble has the ability and the acumen to play basketball at the next level. However, what sets him apart from many other players is the leadership skills he possesses, despite being just 20 years of age. He’s poised and doesn’t seem to ever get too flustered, even when things are going the other way.

If NBA scouts pass on Trimble in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft, they will be making a monumental mistake. He’s one heck of a player and will only continue to grow. Don’t believe me. Just watch.
