The Baltimore Orioles should take a look at several players who were non-tendered, including Henderson Alvarez, Steve Cishek and Ryan Cook.

The O’s are a team that looks to find players in any way possible. The Rule 5 draft, the minor league Rule 5 draft, free agents, trades, etc.

With that being said, the list of players that were non-tendered holds some interest for the Oriole fan, and also their front office I’m sure.

There are several players who are now free agents that the Orioles should be interested in. Let’s take a look at them, ranking them by how much they appeal to the Orioles and their needs.

  1. Henderson Alvarez – It is baffling that the Miami Marlins non-tendered Alvarez. However, it is likely due to the fact that it appears Alvarez may not be ready to start the year. Even so, he is a former All-Star, and was the Opening Day starter last year.

The Orioles have signed players in the past who may not be ready to start the season. Johan Santana would be an example of that. They could sign Alvarez, let him get healthy and use Tyler Wilson or Mike Wright as necessary around early season off dates.

Alvarez is a pitcher who can be a very good starter, he just needs to get healthy. In 2013-2014, when healthy, Alvarez pitched to a 2.89 ERA, a 53.6 percent ground ball rate, and had a no-hitter. And we all know how important ground balls are in Camden Yards, and how that plays to the O’s defensive strengths. If I was Dan Duquette, I would be giving Alvarez a low-risk, high-reward contract with lots of incentives. Coincidentally, Alvarez’s last start of his 2015 season came against the Orioles on May 22.
