Chip Kelly is not coming to the Maryland Terrapins

The Maryland Terrapins are in search of a new head coach for the football team, but Chip Kelly is not coming to College Park.

The more the Philadelphia Eagles lose, the more the rumors of Chip Kelly being pushed out the door continue. Following their shameful 45-14 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, the rumors are going to be at an all-time high.

The experiment with Kelly has gone downhill for the Eagles. He tried to change everything there is about the NFL game. How his players eat. How they sleep. How they practice. How they run their offense. The first two seasons in Philadelphia produced 10-win seasons, but the Eagles look like they’ve given up on their head coach.

The problem with Chip Kelly is he’s not a good general manager. He has made mistakes in getting rid of LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Nick Foles. He has not gotten the return on investment in Sam Bradford, DeMarco Murray and Byron Maxwell. His personnel decisions have drastically hurt that franchise.

His style works in college. He had great success while at the University of Oregon, which landed him the job in Philadelphia. Since the first day he joined the Eagles, many wondered if he’s system would translate into from college to the pros. The rumblings of him going back to coaching college athletes has consistently been brought up. Earlier this season, he was asked if he had any interest in the University of Southern California job, which he quickly denied.

I am with the general public that if his stint with the Eagles ends after this season, he’s headed back to the collegiate level. However, I am going to be the bearer of bad news for Maryland Terrapins fans that are hopeful he chooses College Park as his next destination. It’s not going to happen.

FanSided released a list of the top five college football positions that Chip Kelly would likely accept if he should leave the Eagles. Maryland is not one of the five mentioned. In fact, FanSided and I seem to agree on which jobs he would likely take.

The five teams that FanSided named as potential suitors for Kelly are USC, LSU, Miami, Virginia Tech and South Carolina, the lone team I did not mention.

For some unknown reason, people think that because Oregon has crazy uniforms combinations to choose from, that Maryland can be the “Oregon of the East” with the Terps ties to Under Armour. If you really think uniforms matter to Chip, you know little about the man. All he wants to do is win.

The reason why Kelly will not come to College Park is where the Terrapins stand in the Big Ten. Maryland is currently tied for the worst record in the conference and you can make a case that it’s going to be a while before they get out of the basement. While Kelly might get some satisfaction about completely turning a program around, he’s also full aware that coaches are not awarded enough time to overhaul a program.

The Big Ten is also filled with powerhouse programs that will make it impossible for him to compete with. Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan are some of the most lucrative jobs in the country. They all have history of being contending teams and have championships to prove it. Maryland hasn’t won a national championship since 1953. It’s also been a long time since they were relevant nationally.

The aforementioned jobs are positions that carry national spotlight. They all have tradition of winning and that attracts the top recruits. USC and LSU have had some of the top recruiting classes for over a decade. Virginia Tech and Miami have landed some of the top players to ever play college football. South Carolina is in the always competitive South Eastern Conference.

Maryland cannot compete with those programs. Kevin Plank, the owner of Under Armour and Maryland alum, will make an impact on the future of the Terps, but not one that is going to get Maryland into the elite level of college football. It’s really going to take a lot for Maryland to lure recruits away from Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh and Mark Dantonio, as well as the rest of the country.

That’s why there is no chance that Chip Kelly comes to Maryland. If I had to put money on it, he will be in Southern California if he leaves the Eagles. He already knows the Pac-12 from his time at Oregon and can take over a team that is ready to win immediately.

Sorry to spoil your hopes Terps fans, but Chip wants to win championships. That is not happening at the University of Maryland.
