Maryland Basketball: Terps Cruise to Victory in Season Opener

The Maryland basketball team tipped off their 2015-16 campaign on Friday night against Mount St. Mary’s. The result was what most people expected.

The No. 3 ranked Terps took the floor in front of a raucous crowd at the Xfinity Center and sent them home happy as the defeated the the Mountaineers by a score of 80-56.

Maryland got on the board first and they never trailed the entire game. Things were a bit sloppy in the first half for the Terps, as Mount St. Mary’s cut the lead down on multiple occasions. However, the light clicked for Maryland in the second half.

Senior forward Jake Layman led the way for the Terps with 16 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Melo Trimble chipped in 14 points. The big men, Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter and freshman Diamond Stone, combined for 20 points and 15 rebounds. Jared Nickens contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists off the bench.

The Terps (1-0) will now get back to practice as they ready themselves for a beltway battle against Georgetown on Tuesday night.
