The Maryland Terrapins football team began the 2015-16 college football season on the right foot, defeating the Richmond Spiders by a score of 50-21. A number of players played well, leading the Terps to victory. These players deserve to be recognized. Each week, we will reward the top Maryland players with helmet stickers based on their performance. The players with the most helmet stickers at the end of the season will win the Baltimore Wire’s MVP award for the season.
Let’s see who impressed us in the Week 1 victory.
3 Stickers: CB Will Likely
Well, this is a no-brainer. If people didn’t know who Will Likely was before Saturday, they sure do know now. The 2014 All-Big Ten selection set a new Big Ten single-game record, racking up 233 punt returns yards against Richmond. For whatever reason, the Spiders kept kicking it to him. Heck, they’re the reason Likely is getting these helmet stickers! Give a player with this type of ability eight punt returns and you see what happens.
2 Stickers: RB Brandon Ross
With so much uncertainty at the quarterback position, the Terps will be reliant on the running game all season long. The backs certainly came to play on Saturday, totaling 307 yards on the ground. Ross, the senior, accounted for 150 of those and he also scored a touchdown. He appears to be a much different back this season and that’s a good sign for Maryland.

1 Sticker: DL Quinton Jefferson
The Terps’ defense got off to a bit of a slow start, but towards the end of the second half, they began to find their mojo. The front seven was able to get penetration and cause a number of problems for Richmond. Jefferson is the Terps’ most experienced returner on the defensive line and he showed and proved, recording two sacks against Richmond.
Around the Country:
3 Stickers: BYU QB Tanner Mangum
What a moment for BYU freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum. The Cougars’ star Taysom Hill went down, and the young man, who just finished a two-year mission, grew up really fast. BYU was driving against Nebraska late in the fourth quarter, down by one point. It came down to the last play and the Cougars were out of field goal range. The ball was snapped, then this happened.
2 Stickers: Texas A&M DL Daeshon Hall
This could honestly go to the entire Texas A&M defense, which sacked Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici nine times on Saturday. Hall racked up four of those, to go along with seven tackles and two forced fumbles.. He was an absolute beast all game long and he was rewarded for his efforts, being named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
1 Sticker: Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche
This last sticker is being awarded for one play in particular, but who cares? It was that special. The 300-pound Rebels’ defensive tackle showed off his speed and athleticism on a 31-yard touchdown reception against Tennessee-Martin. There aren’t too many guys his size who can outrun a Division I defense. It was nothing short of spectacular.
