Baltimore Ravens Rookies Preview Entering Training Camp
By Joe Serpico
Maxx Williams
The Ravens entered this draft with a lot of uncertainty with their playmakers. Dennis Pitta has been Joe Flacco‘s top target since joining the team, but we still have no idea if he will be back on the playing field this season. He was recently played on PUP and all the Ravens can do is wait and see if he is going to play or not.
They did not wait to find a replacement when they selected Maxx Williams in the second round. The Ravens traded their second-round pick and a fifth-round pick to move up three spots to grab the top tight end in this year’s class. The Ravens had three fifth round picks to use so it made sense for the team to use that luxury to move up to fill a big need. Furthermore, they stole Williams from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were hoping to land the Minnesota tight end would be the heir apparent to Heath Miller.
Williams is a sneaky Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate because Flacco has always favored throwing to his tight ends. The news of Pitta not starting the season only enhances his chances of garnering those honors. It also forces the rookie into the lineup right away as Crockett Gillmore and Nick Boyle are the only tight ends on the roster. There is a strong likelihood that Williams is the Week 1 starter and a 600-yard, four touchdown season is possible for the rookie.
