Big Ten Tournament: Can Lady Terps Take Postseason Hardware?

The Maryland Terrapins Women’s Basketball Team is ready for the Big 10 Tournament after beating the 25th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats 69-48 behind junior guard Brene Moseley’s 18 points. Brionna Jones was her usual self and got a point-rebound double-double in this game (14 points, 13 rebounds) while Shatori Walker-Kimbrough almost had a triple-double (11 points, nine assists and eight rebounds).

This great performance capped off what was a great regular season, so great that they earned the regular season Big Ten Championship and now it’s on to the postseason. People are wondering… Can they take postseason Big Ten Championship?

The Big Ten Tournament begins March 4th and the Lady Terps are coming into the conference playoff a perfect 18-0 They still have not lost a game since December 3rd. They are riding an unstoppable 21-game winning streak and they have their head coach Brenda Frese and big four: Lexie Brown, Laurin Mincy, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, and Brionna Jones to thank for it. Ever since they lost to that Notre Dame team December 3rd by 20 points, it seems like they never looked back and have been the story of the Big Ten.

The Lady Terps can win the Big Ten Tournament and from my perspective, they have too. If they don’t go 21-0 in the Big Ten, they essentially would be like the New England Patriots of a few years back when they had their undefeated season wiped out by a Super Bowl loss.  They’ve handled competition very well up to this point and should be able to do well when it really counts. The teams I think will give them problems are: Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio State Buckeyes and the team they just beat, Northwestern.

I think a wild card team to look out for in the Big Ten Tournament would be the Michigan Wolverines because of Katelynn Flaherty and Cyesha Goree. Even though that team has struggled and only had a 16-13 overall record and 8-10 Big Ten record, like the New York Giants did in 2011 with a regular season record of 9-7, they proved that they were capable of a playoff run. Michigan could get hot and do the same. In the playoffs, almost anything can happen.

So if indeed the Maryland Terrapins make it to The Big Dance, I am predicting that Ohio State will meet them in the championship game. I like the way the Buckeyes play. Much like the men’s team in Columbus, their counterparts play with speed and size, so both teams have that in common in addition to the fact that they have outstanding freshman point guards. Kelsey Mitchell can ball. She doesn’t play like a freshman and has proven that game in and game out. This is why I say Ohio State could be an opponent for the Lady Terps to pay attention to.

Big Ten Championship Game Prediction: Ohio State 59, Maryland 62.
