Maryland State Track Championships – Northwest Powers through 4A
The Northwest High School Jaguars won the boys indoor Maryland State Track Championships by a rather comfortable margin, especially for all of the talent that is annually in division 4A – the largest schools in MPSSAA competition. They scored 73 points, 18 better than Bowie’s 55 and 33 points more than C.H. Flowers in third place. It was a much more comfortable margin of victory than their two-point win over Paint Branch in 2014, and three points over Bowie.
Picking up 20 points for Northwest was middle distance runner Diego Zarate, who was a double winner in the 800 and 1600 in 1:58.3 and 4:22.96. Zarate was the winner of the 1600 a year ago (4:21) while also gaining six points in the 3200.
Also winning state titles for Northwest was hurdler Shyheim Wright and high jumper Aaron Beidleman. For the latter, it was keeping the title in Northwest’s possession, as his 6-02 winning jump equaled teammate Austin Castleberry’s winner in 2014.

4A Girls – Clarksburg Tops Bowie and South River by 11 Points Each
The Clarksburg girls indoor track team was second to South River just a year ago, but they flipped places this season. They also topped 2013 champion Bowie by the same 11-point margin.
Clarksburg’s lone individual state champion was junior Alexus Pyles in the 55 hurdles, defending her title from 2014. Her freshman sister, Cierra, took fourth place in the event for an additional five points.
The only other Clarksburg individual scoring on the track came from Lucie Noall, who placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:23. The 4×200 relay squad gained six points on a third-place finish.
But the biggest pile of points came from the high jump with a total of 16, as the Plyes girls took second and seventh, along with Naja Mcadam finishing third.
