1A Boys

1. Smithsburg, 72;  2. Fairmont Heights, 65;  3. Central-PG, 64;  4. Bohemia Manor, 36.

Smithsburg scored with points all up and down the lineup to tally a sufficient amount to hold off Fairmont Heights and Central of PG. The Leopards from northern Washington County only had one individual state champ, but cobbled together a total of four silver medals, while scoring points in 11 of 13 events.

Winning the shot put state championship was senior Heath Hott with a toss of 44-06, good enough for a 20-inch victory.

Junior Micah Daigneault and senior Nathaniel Craig each gained 13 points by both taking silver medals in one event and a fourth-place finish in another. Daigneault was second in the 500 in 1:10.33 and fourth in the 800 in 2:06.  Craig was the silver medalist in the 300 dash in 36.41 and fourth in the 55-meter dash as well.

Also winning silver medals for the Leopard boys were senior Adam Dwyer in pole vault and Will Merritt in the 3200-meter run (10:37).

There was one tie of a 1A state record. Nathan Gill of Manchester Valley jumped 6-04 to tie the previous 1A state high jump record with Jason Redmon of Boonsboro – from 1991.
