1A Girls

1. Valley, 96;  2. Smithsburg, 86;  3. Surrattsville, 60;  4. Central-PG, 44.

The 1A girls state championship was essentially a two-team affair between Smithsburg and Manchester Valley, with the latter prevailing by 10 points. A year ago, Manchester Valley finished in second place by a mere four points to 2014 champion Pikesville.

There were familiar names repeating as state champions for Manchester Valley. Katie Leisher won both the 1600 and 3200, just as she did in 2014. Smithsburg sophomore Mallory Moholt placed second in both events.

Kayla Geho defended her 2014 title in the shot by winning again, seven incher farther in 33-10.5.

Manchester crowned two other individual state champs, as Holley Baughman won the pole vault while Liz Leahy took first in the high jump. Leahy was also second in the 55-meter hurdles. Teammate Lizzie Colson was also a silver medalist in the 500-meter race.

Going into the 1600-meter relay, MV held an 88-83 lead over the Smithsburg Leopards, but they widened it to the final margin by taking second place to Smithsburg’s sixth.

Winning a pair of state titles for Smithsburg was Gabbriell Reason. She won the 55-meter dash in 7.36 and the 300 in 42.04.  Gabby Reason was the winner a year ago in the 55-dash at 7.41.

There were no new girls 1A state records.
