A Maryland Terrapins Road Trip To Big Ten Country – On To Columbus
Ohio Welcomes You (Author Photo)
I drove by too fast for a picture. But after five plus hours on the road from Baltimore it was funny to see an Interstate sign for Baltimore. Sure it was Baltimore, Ohio, but it was still pretty funny.
In my last story I mentioned that I was going on a trip into Big Ten country to check out a couple of Maryland Terrapins basketball games. Well, the first day is done and I saw some cool sights. A short distance past Baltimore, the Ohio one, is the state capitol of the Buckeye State, Columbus. It is also known as the home of THE Ohio State University.
The city has a certain excitement around it as the Buckeyes are playing for the football National Championship next Monday. It is that same feeling that one gets in Maryland the further and further the Ravens get towards the Super Bowl. Or during the 2014 ALCS run of the Orioles.

Now, as an Illini and Terps fan I hesitate to root for Ohio State. But it is fun to see the fans get into the spirit of the game. At a nearly required dinner break at a local branch of Cincinnati’s iconic Skyline Chili, every booth was filled with scarlet and gray. Banners and signs decorated the dining room. Even for a team I tend to despise it still feels right. Sports brings community together. And I “think” I need to root for the conference that my two teams belong to. I think…….
Tomorrow I head off to Central Illinois with a few stops in the Indianapolis area on the way. I love Big Ten Country.
