There was quite a lot of local Maryland college sports in action this past weekend. Here is a wrap-up of some of the action.

UMBC Soccer

The Retrievers continue their unlikely run to the NCAA title, besting Creighton 4-3 in the tiebreaker after a scoreless draw in regular time. Kay Banjo had the winning kick. UMBC goalkeeper Billy Heavner has been amazing in the NCAA tournament as he has not allowed a single score during regular game play.

The Retrievers will now face the 16th-seeded Virginia Cavaliers in the first semifinal match of the NCAA College Cup on Friday, December 12. The contest will take place at WakeMed Soccer Stadium in Cary, North Carolina at 5:00 pm and we be televised by ESPNU.

Providence and UCLA play in the other semifinal match at 7:30pm, also on December 12.

Local Bowl Update – Terps, Navy, Military Bowl

Maryland is set to play Stanford in the Foster Farms Bowl (formerly known as the San Francisco Bowl/Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl/Emerald Bowl/Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl/Fight Hunger Bowl) to be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 10:00pm Eastern. ESPN will carry the game. The game is being held at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California for the first time after previously being played in San Francisco’s AT&T Park since 2002. Maryland played in this bowl under one of the former names back in 2007, losing to Oregon State.

Navy had previously accepted a bid to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Their opponent is now set, as they will play the San Diego State Aztecs. The game is to be played at the Aztecs home stadium, Qualcomm Stadium on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 9:30pm Eastern and will be shown on ESPN.

There will also be a college bowl game played in Maryland for the second straight year, as the Military Bowl will be held Saturday, Dec. 27 at 1:00 pm. Virginia Tech will face Cincinnati.

Loyola v. Mount St. Mary’s Basketball

Loyola University Maryland and Mount St. Mary’s played their annual rivalry game on Saturday night. The Mount won 74-65. Byron Ashe scored 16 points points in the victory. The Baltimore Wire attended the game and it was good to see a spirited crowd, full of fans of both teams.
