The final eight teams in the four divisions of the MPSSAA State Football Championships have been determined through semi-finals play this weekend. The four state title games will be contested at M&T Bank Stadium this coming week.

Three of last year’s four state champion teams are back in the finals, with only 2A Middletown not returning after having won three consecutive titles. No team in Maryland has ever won four in a row.

Here is the quick story for each of the four divisions (4A the largest schools, 1A the smallest).

MPSSAA Division 4A

No. 1 Northwest (11-1) defeated No. 4 Duval (9-3), 47-12

No. 3 Old Mill (10-2) defeated No. 2 Howard (12-0), 10-3

Final Game – 12/5 at 7:30

Northwest High School of Germantown in Montgomery County will seek their second consecutive title, having defeated the Suitland Rams of Forestville by a score of 33-16 just a year ago. Old Mill will be their opponent, having accomplished a bit of an upset over unbeaten Howard.

MPSSAA Division 3A

No. 1 Damascus (12-0) defeated No. 4 Glenelg (9-3), 33-0

No. 2 Franklin (11-1) defeated No. 3 Thomas Stone (11-1), 30-0

Final Game – 12/4 at 7:00

Franklin High School of Reisterstown prevailed over Linganore (Frederick) 20-6 last year to register their first state title ever. To win a second consecutive championship they will need to get past the top-ranked, unbeatern Damascus High School.

MPSSAA Division 2A

No. 1 Douglass-PG (12-0) defeated No. 4 South Carroll (9-3), 43-0

No. 3 Dunbar (9-3) defeated No. 2 Kent Island (10-2), 24-21

Final Game – 12/6 at 7:00

After three consecutive Middletown titles – winning last year over Patuxent – a new champion will be crowned in 2A, as Douglass of PG County will be the top seed. To win it all they will have to get through perennial power Dunbar of Baltimore City.

MPSSAA Division 1A

No. 1 Fort Hill (12-0) defeated No. 4 Surrattsville (8-4), 36-20
No. 3 Douglass-B (11-1) defeated No. 2 Cambridge-SD (11-1), 26-0

Final Game – 12/6 at 3:30

The 1A state championship game will be a repeat of the 2013 finals, where Fort Hill of Cumberland County in Western Maryland will defend their title over Douglass of Baltimore. The final last year was 25-0, though the halftime lead was 7-0. Look for a closer game this year.
