Was there any question who this game ball was going to? Actually, yes, as Joe Flacco had a remarkable game in his own right. Flacco increased his passer rating 10 points in a single game and nearly doubled his passing touchdowns. None of that would have happened, though, without an inspired performance from Steve Smith.

On the first play from scrimmage, Steve Smith caught a quick hitter and churned out some tough yards after the catch for a 17-yard gain.

Move on to the first touchdown. Smith eschewed traditional wisdom, breaking off his route and pursuing a ball not intended for him. His gambit worked, as Smith caught a tipped ball and took it 61-yards to the house. A risky decision, but one no doubt informed by years of experience.

Flash forward to the second touchdown. With just 21 yards between him and the end zone, Smith managed to gain separation on a go route. Then, with the defender draped all over him, Smith used his strength and concentration to come down with Flacco’s lob in the back of the end zone.

In no way, shape or form did Steve Smith look 35 years old. Even the best receivers that old have largely been reduced to possession receivers. Smith hasn’t. And for proving to be ageless yet again in a game which carried special significance for Smith, he gets the offensive game ball.
