The Baltimore Orioles came back from a 3-0 deficit on Wednesday afternoon to defeat the New York Yankees 9-5, officially putting the Yanks out of the playoffs.
The game ended with Derek Jeter on deck while Brett Gardner was being called out on a third strike from Darren O’Day.
While all of this was happening, the announcers were speaking about the descent of ominous dark clouds and pending horrible weather. Perhaps the gods of baseball history past were aroused from their sleep by the reverberation of the temple foundations … that the Yankees were not to be in the playoffs.
There is plenty of speculation and hand-wringing about the forecast for New York City on Thursday. After people have been paying excessive prices for tickets to be a part of the scene at Derek Jeter’s last game in Yankee Stadium, and perhaps his final game ever, it is difficult to imagine that every possible effort will not be applied to get the game accomplished.
Looking at the forecast, it does indeed call for regular rain overnight and throughout much of the day. But the percentages do seem to diminish in the evening hours. And perhaps it will all work out after all.

The Baltimore Orioles pounded out 15 hits on a day after getting 17 … on a day after getting just one. Nelson Cruz accounted for four of the base knocks, with Ryan Flaherty throwing in three. If Flaherty could get hot for the next three weeks, that would be huge for the Orioles and their hopes for a deep playoffs run.
