Steve Smith, Dennis Pitta and even Owen Daniels have been the names on everyone’s lips after the first two games. Torrey Smith should change that with a big Week 3 performance.
Torrey has a good history against the Browns, going for 97, 46, 85 and 78 yards in their last four meetings. With the Browns’ current struggles in the secondary, Torrey might have his biggest game against Cleveland yet.
According to Pro Football Focus (subscription needed), Joe Haden has allowed 123 yards on 11 targets this season, while Justin Gilbert has allowed 151 yards on 13 targets. Buster Skrine has been more effective, allowing just 56 yards this season, but he gets bumped into the slot in nickel situations, meaning Torrey will be going against Gilbert or Haden most of the game. He must be licking his chops.
Gary Kubiak‘s conservative game plans to this point may have some question Torrey’s role in the offense, but make no mistake, Kubiak will take shots when they present themselves.
Against this secondary, opportunities will be there, so expect Kubiak and Joe Flacco to try to take advantage of them. If they succeed, it will be Torrey Smith, still the Ravens’ best deep threat, who will be the beneficiary.
