Maryland Terrapins comeback falls short against West Virginia.

We said it would be a close game.

But unfourtunatly, our prediction on who would win just fell short as the Maryland Terrapins (2-1) fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1), 40-37 on a last second field goal.

  • It a game that was not only a state border rivalry, but also a game that honored the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner, it didn’t disappoint one bit.

Just like the cannons that lit up the night when Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner, both teams lit-up the scoreboard and combined for 77 points, over 1000 total yards and 173 total plays (108 ran by WVU).

Maryland was led by senior quarterback C.J. Brown who threw for 241 yards and rushed for 161 more. Brown threw for one score and ran for a 75-yard touchdown to start the second half and get the Terps back in the game.

But it wasn’t enough as WVU’s quarterback, Clint Trickett had himself a field day by amassing 511 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

The Terps came all the way back from 22 points down in the first half to tie it up with a little more than 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

WVU tried to take the lead with 4:16 left to play in the game but kicker Josh Lambert had his 43-yard field goal blocked by nose tackle Darius Kilgo.

The Terrapins then went three-and-out on the following drive which allowed the Mountaineers one last chance to go for the win.

WVU went 65 yards down the field on 13 plays which set up Lambert to redeem himself. This time, Lambert was money from 47-yards and the Terps saw their comeback expire with the game clock.

Maryland did show a lot of heart after being down 22 points early in the game. I’m sure a lot of fans did not think the Terps would put up a fight, but it is that fight that gives this team hope even after a disappointing loss.

"“That was a tough one out there today. It was a hard-fought battle for 60 minutes and it came down to the end. We came up one or two plays short today, but I was proud of our guys to fight back the way that they did.” Coach Randy Edsall"

The Terps will finish their non-conference schedule next weekend when they travel to Syracuse. The game is set to kick-off at 12:30pm and will be broadcasted on the ACC Network.
