1. Quarterbacks – Inconsistency behind Brown

Sixth-year senior and starting quarterback C.J. Brown was on the field but did not suit up for the scrimmage. Instead, he was signaling all the plays into his back-up quarterbacks the entire scrimmage.

There is no need to worry about Brown’s lack of participation. Edsall seemed to be using this scrimmage to see what some of the second and third string players could do.

If the depth chart for the first game came out today, the quarterbacks would be C.J. Brown, Caleb Rowe, Shane Cockerille, Perry Hills and Will Ulmer — based upon when each went under center during the scrimmage.

Brown is the guy who will be running the offense this season for the Terps and gives them someone who has a good grasp of the system, can make plays with his arm and legs, and has lots of experience.

Last season, Brown completed almost 59 percent of his passes, racked up 2,242 yards through the air even after his two star receivers went down with broken legs, and passed for 13 touchdowns. He also ran for 576 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Behind Brown are a bunch of guys who lack experience and seemed to be very inconsistent throughout the scrimmage.

Caleb Rowe took snaps with the first team offense and went 16-for-27 for 227 yards and two passing touchdowns. But, Rowe also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and a couple other passes bounced off defenders’ hands.

"“I thought Caleb was very inconsistent today,” Edsall said. “Didn’t think he made a lot of good decisions out there, and that’s one of things I wanted to see.”"

Perry Hills was intercepted twice, but a young Will Ulmer found Malcolm Culmer across the middle for the final score of the scrimmage.
