There are only two statues in front of the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore: one of Johnny Unitas (as you saw before) and one that they recently put up of Ray Lewis. Besides being the greatest athlete in Baltimore sports history, he is arguable the best football player in the history of the NFL. However, there are also those that hold that he isn’t even the best linebacker in history, many think that title goes to Lawrence Taylor. Regardless of what you think of him, you have to respect him because this is a guy that changed the perspectives of pre-game rituals.
Lewis is most known for his pre-game speeches that tended to fire his teammates up for the game. He has done it ever since he came into the league and it has worked to a charm. With that being said, his play on the field is what makes him one of the greatest in history. Lewis won two Defensive Player of the Year awards in his career as well as a Super Bowl MVP in 2001. He was also featured on the cover of Madden ’05 before only playing in six games the following year.
Lewis’ career totals are pretty incredible. He is the only player in the history of the game to record 40 sacks and 30 interceptions in his career as he totaled 41.5 sacks and 31 picks in his 17 years in the league. The 13-time Pro Bowler recorded 1,562 tackles in his career which is second-most in NFL history. He also scored three touchdowns, forced 19 fumbles, and recovered 20 fumbles in 228 games in his career. He walked out as a champion following the 2013 playoff run when the Ravens won Super Bowl 47 against the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. He ended his career as a champion, which means he will forever be a champion.
