9. Eddie Murray, 1B, Baltimore Orioles
“Steady Eddie” spent most of his career with the Orioles and is considered to be the best hitter in Baltimore Orioles history. He is fourth in both games played and hits. He also became the only player to hit his 500th career home run with the Orioles, doing so on September 6, 1996. He spent 12 years with the Orioles and also spent the next eight years with three other teams (Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Cleveland Indians).
He made his Major League debut in 1977 for the Orioles when he played in 160 games and won the American League Rookie of the Year award, batting .283 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. In his 12 seasons with the O’s, Murray averaged 28 home runs, 99 RBIs, and was a perennial candidate for the Most Valuable Player Award, twice finishing second in voting. The Orioles also appeared in the postseason twice, in 1979 and 1983, and won the World Series in 1983. He won the Gold Glove Award three consecutive times from 1982 to 1984.
Murray was traded
to the Dodgers in 1988 and had three successful seasons there, knocking in 279 runs over that span. Prior to the ’92 season, Murray signed a two-year deal with the Mets in an effort to go back to winning ways, but they finished with 90 and 103 losses in his two years there. Murray with the 3,000-hit plateau as an Indian in 1995. in ’96 and ’97, Murray played for several teams including the Orioles in 1996 where he fittingly hit his 500th career home run. Murray was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993.
