The Nebraska Cornhuskers are relatively new to the Big Ten also, as they joined only in 2011. So the Maryland Terrapins will be just as new to Nebraska fans as the whole league is to Maryland.
The university is located in Lincoln, the capital of the state, and the second-most populous city after Omaha. Over a quarter million people live in this shockingly large city which is located a little less than an hour’s drive from Omaha. Looking at the map you will see that most of the population of this state is tilted towards the eastern border with Iowa. No real baseball team has a foothold with fans here, but the Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees have the biggest pockets of fans. The area is generally Kansas City Chiefs territory but may have some Vikings supporters as well. There is no clear-cut NBA and NHL faction here.
Football is a passion of the Cornhusker fan, with Memorial Stadium a sea of red at all games. The quality is still very good, but may still have trouble reaching the peaks enjoyed under coach Tom Osborne. Bo Pelini is a controversial figure who surprisingly has lasted six years. The next big sport on campus is women’s volleyball which has won the NCAA championship three times. Wrestling, men’s and women’s gymnastics, bowling and rifle are some other well-respected sports at the university. Basketball has been a serious weakness for years, but with the new Pinnacle Bank Arena, coach Tim Miles seems to be in the right place to lead them towards success.
Lincoln, being a pretty large college town has numerous food options. Round-Abouts Restaurant has pot pies with twist, Runza Restaurant is a small chain with pastry style sandwiches and Amu Manu Ramen Bar are just some of the unique options. Ivanna Cone not only has a great name, but offers some great ice cream choices. Duffy’s Tavern has been named on many lists as one of the top five college bars in the country.
