It really was a great honor and testimonial for the new success of the Baltimore Orioles organization to have five players at the All-Star Game.

Chris Davis and Manny Machado had incredible numbers coming into the 2013 game. Davis had a slash line of .315 / .392 / .717 / 1.109 … including 37 home runs in 95 games, along with 93 RBIs. Crush only had 27 doubles … I say “only” because Machado already had 39 two-baggers with a .310 average in his first full season.

J.J. Hardy’s stats were a bit more modest with only a .251 average. But he was honored for his power-hitting numbers as a shortstop, having hit 16 doubles and 16 home runs on the season so far. As well, Hardy was recognized for his defensive abilities in what would be a Gold Glove year.

Adam Jones had All-Star break numbers of 19 home runs with a .296 batting average. He scored 67 runs while also knocking in 67.

Chris Tillman was 11-3 over his 19 starts on the season. His ERA at that moment was 3.95, having pitched 111.2 innings. His 1.37 WHIP was certainly not exceptional, but he was able to pitch out of much trouble and give the Orioles a chance to win in his starts.

In the All-Star Game starting lineup Chris Davis batted fourth, Adam Jones seventh, and J.J. Hardy ninth. Manny Machado was a substitute at third base late in the game, but Tillman did not appear.

Adam Jones doubled in the fourth inning and was driven home by Hardy on a fielder’s choice groundout. Davis was 1-for-3, Jones was 1-for-3 on a double, Hardy was 0-for-2 with the RBI, and Machado struck out in his only at-bat.

One of my favorite memories of the 2013 season was seeing the Orioles players in the AL dugout cheering for the massive Prince Fielder while stretching a double into a triple. This was before Fielder became a nude photo model for ESPN.

The Orioles in the dugout are seen at the very end of this clip …
