Top 50 Players In Baltimore Sports History: Honorable Mentions

Not everyone is good enough to make the top 50. However, some just miss the cut and deserved to be acknowledged.

I put together about 55 different players and considered all of them to make the list. With that being said, here are the few players that just missed the list of the top 50 players in Baltimore sports history:

Marshal Yanda, LG

Yanda is undoubtedly the second-to-best offensive lineman in Ravens franchise history. The fact that he missed the list should show you how many good players there have been in this storied city. Yanda has played 99 games since coming into the league in 2007 and has started in 88 of them. Since 2011, he has made three-straight pro bowls and has been selected as an all-pro three consecutive times as well. He has become one of the best offensive guards in the league. The Ravens surely believed that, as they signed the guard to a five-year, $32-million deal prior to the start of the 2011 season. Yanda has always been a fan favorite in Baltimore and he will continue to be one until the end of his career.

Jamie Sharper, MLB

Although Sharper is mainly known for his contributions to the 2000 Ravens defense, he has many more attributes than just that. Sharper played in every game in his five years with the Ravens, recording 14 sacks and 293 tackles before going over to the Houston Texans in the expansion draft. He actually took his play to another level in his three years with the Texans, recording 95+ tackles in each of his seasons there and leading the league with 301 total tackles over those years. However Sharper had some bright moments in Baltimore. The play that everyone remembers is the game-clinching interception against the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship that would send the Ravens to the Super Bowl. He might have lead the league in tackles with Houston, but he will always be remembered first and foremost for what he accomplished in Baltimore.

Brian Roberts, 2B

To top off our honorable mentions, let’s give some recent Orioles fans a familiar face. Brian Roberts batted in the lead-off spot for the O’s since 2003, and was a vital part in their lineup. He hit over 50 doubles three times. He has a career batting average of .277 with an OBP of .348. Roberts was selected to the All-Star game in 2005 and 2007. What’s unfortunate for Roberts is that he never really had the chance to play for a contending team. He came into the league in 2001 and the Orioles had losing records in each of his years there. What was even more unfortunate for Roberts were his injuries. He had several injury-plauged seasons which caused him to miss a number of games in a number of seasons. If Roberts were able to stay healthy throughout his career; I think we would be looking at him very differently right now.
