Boonsboro Trio Piles Up Maryland State Track Championships
Imagine being the fastest 1600-meter runner ever in the history of the county in which you live … having broken and totally smashed the previous decades-old records, only to have one other person do it just a step or two faster … and to have that other person be your own teammate. Well, that is the situation for Boonsboro sophomore Haley Wright.
Wright finished second to Grams in the 1600 at the state meet in 5:00.37 – the second fastest time of the day over all four Maryland classifications. She was second in the 3200 in 11:07 – 11 seconds behind Meggan, but nine seconds ahead of third place. In cross country, she placed fourth in Maryland 2A.
All of this has happened in a rather short time for Wright, who started running indoor track as a freshman last winter to stay in shape for soccer. “It still blows my mind and I can’t believe it; I didn’t know all of this was going to happen that fast,” Wright said.
Certainly being on the same team as Grams has its training benefits. “She really pushes me a lot,” she said. “We help each other mentally and in training and are good friends.”
“Running has made me more outgoing and helped me set new goals and dreams that I’m not scared to go after.”
Runners are slow to publicly state definitive numbers as goals, especially if they are big, hairy, audacious numbers … as in this case I think they are. This young lady is a great talent, and I would not bet against her achievements, having accomplished so much in a short window of time.
