This is the fifth edition of a new feature here on The Baltimore Wire. We’ll pick out some of the best quotes from recent days and compile them in one place. The Orioles & Ravens will be the main focus, just as they are on the blog. But we will also pull in the Terps and other Maryland sports quotes and links to stories.

1.  Regarding Caleb Joseph being called up to the Orioles from AAA Norfolk…

Manager Ron Johnson knew he was being called up and pulled a trick on Caleb Joseph. He sharply rebuked Joseph for fraternizing with a player from the other team, and then sternly spoke to Joseph for displaying a disrespectful attitude. Poor Caleb didn’t know what to think, saying later …

“R.J. is a character, so I’ve never seen like a really, really, really serious side to him, so I was scared to death,” Joseph said. “I said, ‘Man, I’m really sorry. I’ll never talk to anybody on their team ever again. I won’t even talk to you if you don’t want me to.’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, we’re going to scratch you. We’re also scratching you because you’re going to Florida tomorrow.’”

2.  A tweet from the Ravens’ Torrey Smith while watching a NBA game…

Speaking about how travelling with the basketball is practically never called…

“So they just don’t even call traveling anymore might as well just carry the basketball like a football to get where you want to go haha”

3.  From a John Eisenberg article about how only the local Baltimore folk believe the Ravens are really improved and possess any sort of serious playoff threat…

“That’s to be expected, I suppose, with the Ravens coming off an underwhelming .500 season. Yes, they’re just 14 months removed from winning the Super Bowl, but you know how things go: What have you done lately?”

4.  From our network’s Baltimore Orioles site editor Domenic Vadala…

I don’t know if he meant to have a double entendre in this statement, but if so, it is a great one…

“The flu that’s ravaging its way through the clubhouse also had a chance to work its way out of Adam Jones and Evan Meek yesterday, both of whom were sent home.”

5.  From Roch Kubatko about Joe Maddon … especially funny since their lights blew out at home on Tuesday night…

After the rainout in Baltimore against the Rays, Roch Kubatko wrote, “Rays manager Joe Maddon complimented the Orioles for deciding to postpone yesterday’s game, but he slipped in a shot. ‘Great call,’ he said. ‘What took you so long?’

Well alrighty. Luckily for the Rays, they play their home games under a dome and don’t need to wrestle with such weather decisions. Just adjust the air conditioning and hope to reach five figures in attendance.”

6.  From Adam Jones about playing in Boston on the anniversary of the bombing…

“Athletes protect athletes and you never want anything bad to happen at an event that deals with athletes, but I think Boston healed pretty nicely from it by winning the World Series, so let’s go up there and beat them.”

7.  From former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie…

After being asked if he felt comfortable pitching in Baltimore…

“Oh, I feel comfortable. I felt very comfortable in Houston, too. I was actually comfortable in Cleveland,” said Guthrie, touched for four runs in each of those games. “If ‘comfortable’ was the issue, I’d be a Cy Young Award winner every year. I’m very comfortable.”

8.  From Bob Costas on MLB Network …

Some NYY fans were chanting that Robinson Cano was a sellout – doing so on his first trip back to the Bronx after signing that $240 million deal. And Costas said…

“There is something ironic about Yankee fans deriding a player as a sellout.”

YEP!
