Baltimore Orioles: Matt Wieters Update – Wednesday Preview

Matt Wieters will not have to have surgery on his ailing elbow is the word leaking out today from an “industry source” about the Orioles catcher. This is good news for sure, as Wieters is among the very top of American League leaders in hitting, and whatever the actual problem, it does not take away from his abilities at the plate.
Apparently Caleb Joseph is being summoned from AAA Norfolk to add catching depth. It would seem that Jemile Weeks is the only possible person on the roster that could possibly be sent down. And an opening already exists on the 40-man roster.
My own personal “industry source” has told me in the past about what a fine person Caleb Joseph is and how he has endured and endured and worked, and then worked some more … all for a time when he can make it to the big leagues. Orioles fans can be grateful now that he was not taken in the Rule 5 Draft, though he was left exposed after his great season last year.

I wonder how many Baltimore sports fans had some déjà-vu feelings when the lights went out at The Trop last night. It usually happens to the Ravens!
Tonight is the middle game of this three-game set. The Baltimore Orioles will send Bud Norris to the mound this evening. After a difficult first game of the season, Norris has pitched a hair under 3.00 ERA in the past four contests, including giving up one run on seven hits in five innings for a win over Pittsburgh last Thursday.

Norris is only 1-2 in three starts against the Rays, and as can be seen in the chart below, James Loney and David DeJesus have had a good bit of success against him…

Cesar Ramos will be the Orioles’ opponent tonight. He is being stretched out after starting the season as a reliever. Ramos only allowed one run on one hit while striking out six in 4.2 innings last week against the Red Sox; but he walked six batters, and that is a really weird-looking line! He also pitched an inning just four days ago against the Yankees. For the season, he is 1-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 21.2 innings.

Against Orioles batters, J.J. Hardy has five hits with two homers in only nine at-bats. Markakis is 3-for-8, but not much else can be seen.
