Here is a wrap of the 1A meet from earlier this week at the Maryland State Indoor Track Championships. Previously I had written separate articles on the boys and girls 2A meets. A day at the indoor track state finals is like watching four meets happening at the same time. It can be very confusing, even for a coach trying to follow simply his or her own division. All of the four meets on Monday (1A and 2A, boys and girls) were very, very close.

1A Girls Summary

At the 1A indoor state meet this past Monday there were no new records set, but the scoring was close for both the girls and boys. In the girls meet, Pikesville went into the final 4×400 event with a lead of 65-64 over Manchester Valley. Pikesville added five points with a 4th place finish, while MV got but two points while finishing 7th. But those two points were enough to grab the finalist’s award for 2nd place in 1A, as North Carroll’s 10 points for winning the race fell just short.

1A Girls Team Scores

1. Pikesville – 70; 2. Manchester Valley – 66; 3. North Carroll – 64; 4. Smithsburg – 61; Central-PG – 53; 6. Perryville – 40, 7. Fairmont Heights – 29; 8. Surrattsville – 25; 9. New Town – 22; 10. Sparrows Point – 18.

1A Boys Summary

Smithsburg High School of Washington County prevented Pikeville from sweeping the 1A meets by scoring a 4.5-point victory. It is not a cliché whatsoever to say that the effort for Smithsburg was a total team contribution. An unusual number of boys scored up and down the lineup with a lot of 4th and 5th point contributions making the difference. The only 10-point championship win was by Caleb Cardone in shot, and the Leopards senior also took second in the 55-meter dash.

My friend Ray Shriver said of the boys, “Caleb Cardone placed 2nd in the 55m after tweaking his hamstring in the 300m – what a gutsy performance … and won the shot put, and it was only the second meet in which he threw. The boys would not be state champions if any one of them had not performed as they did today.”

1A Boys Team Scores

1. Smithsburg – 79.5;  2. Pikesville – 75; 3. Central-PG – 56; 4. New Town – 50; 5. North Carroll – 46; 6. Perryville – 35.5; 7. Bohemia Manor – 31; 7. Forestville – 31; 9. Brunswick – 27; 10. Northwestern-B – 18.
