Coach Mark Turgeon and the Maryland Men’s basketball team look to get back in the win column this weekend at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. The Terps will face the Marist Red Foxes tomorrow who have not fared well in the early portion of this season, losing by an average margin of 26.8 points per game.

The field of teams playing this weekend in St. Thomas is not very strong. Northern Iowa, Loyola Marymount, Marist, Providence, Vanderbilt, Morgan State and La Salle are the teams involved, and I would be surprised if Maryland did not walk away with the tournament championship in hand.

The biggest problem this weekend won’t be any of Maryland’s opponents; their biggest problem will be overcoming themselves. Through three games, the Terps have 45 turnovers (15 turnovers per game). A lot of this is from the sketchy play at point guard.

Roddy Peters looks like he will have the starting point guard job at least early on in the season. As he continues to adjust to the college game, he will only continue to get better. Peters is leading the team with 3.3 assists per game.

I would love to see the Terps use this game to really focus on getting their big men involved more. Hopefully, the hard losses to UConn and Oregon State have sunk in and will push Shaq Cleare and Charles Mitchell to step up their game both offensively and defensively.

It’s time for the Terps to string a few wins together and learn from these early losses, being motivated for the rest of the season.

Go Terps!
