Maryland Terrapins’ Melo Trimble and Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan named Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week.

Maryland Terrapins guard Melo Trimble and Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan share the honor of Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week. The award given by the Big Ten Conference is Trimble’s third of his collegiate career. Trimble averaged 23.3 points per game in a span of three games last week with games against Stony Brook, Richmond, and Kansas State.

The 21-year old Maryland star began his superior week with a 21-point performance as the Terps beat Stony Brook, 77-63. In 32 minutes of action, Trimble hit three of his six three-point attempts and went 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Melo Trimble and the Terps traveled to Brooklyn, New York this past weekend as a participant in the Barclays Center Classic. The junior guard was sensational in the Terps’ opening game against Richmond Friday night. With the aid of Trimble, the Terps overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Richmond in overtime, 88-82. Trimble matched his career-high of 31 points in the overtime victory and helped propel Maryland to the Barclays Center Classic title game.

The following night, the Terps faced Kansas State as Trimble added another signature moment to his remarkable Maryland career. Down three points with just 25 seconds remaining, the Terps were on the verge of losing their first game of the season.

The Trimble takeover was in full force after a Maryland timeout as Trimble’s layup brought the Terps within one point with 21 seconds left. Following a missed free throw by Kansas State on the front end of a one-and-one, the Maryland hero hauled in the rebound and glided his way up the floor.

Trimble scurried through two Kansas State defenders leaving him with an open lane towards the basket. With 6.6 seconds left, Trimble hit the game-winning layup, elevating the Maryland Terrapins past Kansas State to win the Barclays Center Classic championship. The Maryland native earned the honors of Most Valuable Player of the holiday tournament.
