Around the beginning of Spring Training, I did my annual series ranking the AL East by position, starting with the catchers, and including, of course, the Baltimore Orioles.

In it, I claimed that the Toronto Blue Jays, led by Russell Martin, would have the best staff of catchers, followed by the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. You can read the entire rankings here.

In looking at those rankings compared to performance, I will examine how each player who played at least 10 games at the position for that team.

I will say, the emergence of Sandy Leon and Gary Sanchez really shook up the rankings, and I’m not sure how that could have been anticipated, and the backup catchers in the AL East are backups for a reason, as their batting numbers showed.
