Baltimore Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson tore his Achilles on the first play of the game and is out for the season.

The one thing you hate to see in preseason is injuries. It is even worse when it takes one play for that to happen.

Newly acquired tight end Ben Watson tore his Achilles tendon on the first offensive play of the game. It is an injury that will end his season after the Ravens had high hopes for the 35-year old.

Maxx Williams and Dennis Pitta did not suit up for the game so Crockett Gillmore, Darren Waller and Nick Boyle will see most of the playing time against the Detroit Lions.

It is a huge loss for the Ravens as Watson was the veteran on a team full of young tight ends. It is no secret that the team hopes Williams is the future at the position. This also opens the door for Pitta to make the roster after being placed on the bubble on our prediction of the skill players that make the roster.

Watson signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Ravens this offseason after coming off his best season as a pro with the New Orleans Saints. He caught 74 passes for 825 yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs.

What remains to be seen is if he attempts to make the comeback like we have seen from Terrell Suggs and Steve Smith. Fortunately, for the Ravens, they have some depth at the position, but losing a leader like Watson is crushing for the offense.

This is horrible news for the Ravens as they welcomed Joe Flacco and Suggs back on the field for the first time in the preseason. This is the first major blow to the team and hopefully the last of the preseason.
