The Maryland Terrapins fended off a late run to defeat the Connecticut Huskies, 76-66, at Madison Square Garden.

It is not often that you thank the opposing coach for earning a win. That was the case for the Maryland Terrapins last night.

Connecticut head coach Kevin Ollie picked up a technical foul after they cut the score to three points as the Terps held on for 76-66 win at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

Preseason All-American Melo Trimble led the way for the Terps, scoring a season-high 25 points and put the game out of reach for the Huskies with the critical free throws following the Ollie technical. Freshman Diamond Stone had his best collegiate game yet, scoring 16 points and adding nine rebounds off the bench in Maryland’s best game of the season.

The sixth-ranked Terps are now 8-1 on the season and looked to be in complete control as they entered halftime with a 38-22. They dominated on the boards, 45-24, including a 23-9 advantage on offensive rebounds.

Daniel Hamilton had a season-high 23 points for the Huskies, who have lost three of four. UConn did a terrific job off making it a game as Hamilton capped a 16-5 run with a 3-pointer with 2:49 to play before Ollie picked up the technical that put the game out of reach.

Maryland head coach Turgeon said the technical “helped us stem the tide a little bit.”

It was big for the Terps to see Stone step up for them, but Jake Layman, who many feel is a potential lottery pick in the 2016 draft, had another quiet evening. He is struggling to find his niche on this team as he has not reached double-digits in points in four of the last five games.

Next up for the Terps is a home game against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday. They have three more non-conference games before Big Ten play begins with a home game against Penn State on Dec. 30.
