Justin Forsett is the Baltimore Ravens Top Running Back

The Baltimore Ravens have featured a multi-player backfield over the first quarter of the season. It has been one that has featured running back’s such as Bernard Pierce, Justin Forsett, and the big rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro. However, they haven’t had one primary back.

In Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, it was Justin Forsett leading the charge with 11 carries totaling to 70 yards. However, he was not given such an opportunity the next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bernard Pierce led the team in carries with 22.

But guess who received the most carries in Week 3? None of those guys. In Week 3 against the Browns, the Ravens handed it off to rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro out of Coastal Carolina who got his first shot in the pros and excelled. He carried the ball 18 times for 91 yards and recorded his first career touchdown.

So as you would imagine, no one really knew who would lead the team in carries for the Week 4 match-up against Carolina. The Ravens only have three running backs and they already used all of them. Sure enough, they turned back to seven-year veteran Justin Forsett, who in my opinion, had been their best and most consistent running back thus far through the season.

He has the most carries on the team with 44 and is ninth in the league in rushing yards. And all eight players ahead of him have received more carries. He holds the best yards-per-carry average in the league at 5.8. Not bad for a guy that has been on five different teams in the first six years of his career.

It was speculated earlier that Forsett was contemplating retirement, but luckily for him and the Ravens, he didn’t. New offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak was a huge part in forcing him to stay and come to Baltimore. Who knows? If it wasn’t for Kubiak, the Ravens might not have Forsett or Owen Daniels right now, who are both former Texans.

The Ravens currently have three running backs on the roster. and all of them have led the team in carries at least once for over the first few weeks of the season, but I believe that Forsett is the go-to-guy here. He has been the most consistent running back not only on the Ravens, but in the entire league. Until he slows down, there is no reason to look elsewhere.
