Ohio State is our next stop around the Big Ten. Maryland fans will probably not enjoy playing Ohio State University in many sports as often as they will have to play them. And no, I would never call this school “THE” ………….Ohio State University as that is just plain silly. I guess I just did, but you get my point. As an Illini fan, I hesitate to say I dislike this school’s attitude, but I can say I like Ohio State better than Michigan…….but not much.

Ohio State is known as the Buckeyes and is located in a major city, Columbus.  The city is almost directly in the center of the state. The Buckeyes name stems from the nickname for the state, which refers to the American Buckeye tree. Brutus the Buckeye is a giant nut, literally, and has been around for over a hundred years.

Columbus is a city of over 800,000 people with two major sports teams with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer and the Blue Jackets of the NHL. The Crew’s self-titled stadium was one of the first soccer specific stadiums in the United States and has ushered in a building spree of similar facilities. The Browns, Bengals, Reds and Indians all have their supporters in this split area. And with LeBron back in the state you should expect to see many Cleveland Cavalier jerseys, not that you won’t notice them everywhere.

Ohio State Football is the Big Ten’s best football school now for many years. They seem to fail on the big stage, but with Urban Meyer in charge expect that to not be the case soon. Meyer gets the recruits and can coach very well. If the players can stay out of trouble they probably will win many titles soon.

Basketball is no slouch under Thad Matta, who gathers much of the same respect seen towards Michigan State’s Tom Izzo. His coaching tree is strong and titles will likely be won under him as well. Their 2007 championship game appearance is just a sign of more to come.

Ohio State is good at many sports. Women’s basketball, Golf, Men’s Gymnastics and Men’s Ice Hockey are all good teams for the school. They have also one of the more established Midwestern lacrosse programs.

I have spent much time in Columbus but my experience with campus area dining and drinking is limited. I would recommend some time to be spent in the Arena District in downtown where places such as A&R Music Bar, Ted’s Montana Grill and BD’s Mongolian Grill offer some good options.  The liquor laws for Sunday drinking can make it difficult to find places to imbibe on that day, so be warned.
