Maryland defeats #5 Virginia 75-69 in final ACC regular season game

It is bittersweet for many Maryland fans as they say goodbye to ACC play, but today’s win made it more sweet than bitter.

Fans held signs and papers that said “61 and done”.

Maryland’s run in the ACC finished on a high note with a huge win over #5 Virginia at the Comcast Center on Sunday afternoon.

It was one of the Terrapins’ best games of the season and it looked like they would finish the job in regulation.

Fans began to file down towards the court in anticipation of a win and a court storming.

But they were met with disappointment as Anthony Gill knocked down a jumper with 1.7 seconds left to force overtime.

After that shot, most fans probably held their heads and thought, “here we go again.”

But Mark Turgeon addressed his team and made a point that must have stuck.

"“Our guys were down. I was down,” Turgeon said. “I said, ‘Let’s make this the best five minutes of the year.’ They didn’t believe me the first time I said it. But I said it 15 times during the timeout.”"

Once overtime began, it was all Maryland .

Comcast was rocking and fans knew they would get to storm Gary Williams Court in the final ACC regular season game in College Park.

Check out the highlights from the game.

This game was big for Maryland in a lot of ways. This team was so close so many times to getting big wins and throughout the season it just seemed to not go their way.

On Sunday, Maryland found a way to make it their day. They executed, they played as a team and most importantly, they found a way to finish down the stretch.

The Terps were led by Seth Allen who scored 20 points along with Dez Wells who finished with 18 points.

The team and the coaches knew that this game was bigger than their team.

"“Today wasn’t just an ordinary game. It was a lot of things,” Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon said. “We always play for Maryland, but today we played for former players, former coaches, all our fans.”"

Terp Nation witnessed the end to an era. Former players and coaches who were a part of the proud past of Maryland celebrated and witnessed the new generation as they now fearlessly embark into the B1G future ahead of them.

This Maryland basketball team made everyone proud on Sunday. Their season has not gone the way many thought it would but these guys have continued to fight and play with pride.

So the question is? Virginia…ACC…HOOS YOUR DADDY?!

Maryland will play Florida State on Thursday, March 13 at noon in the ACC Tournament.
