Ronald Darby, MD Native Shines for Florida State
There is only one Maryland native on the football roster of Florida State University, and he happens to be the roommate and best friend of Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. Potomac High School grad Ronald Darby is a sophomore starting cornerback for the Seminoles. Darby’s name and play was called out several times in the BCS Championship game last evening.
Darby’s freshman year saw him play more on the FSU defense than any other first-year defender. He was awarded the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American honors.
Ronald Darby’s defensive numbers are actually rather anemic. He had but two interceptions this year and few other statistics that stand out, but teams simply will not throw in his direction very frequently. The FSU defensive backfield, though exploited a bit by Auburn last night when playing up to defend the run, has been considered by many to be the best in the country.
Known for his speed and athleticism, Darby is actually not playing at 100%. A groin injury and surgery early in 2013 has him still in comeback mode to some extent.
Darby is not just another guy who is really fast, he has world-class track speed. He was a member of the gold medal-winning USA medley relay at the 2011 World Youth Championships. His track best times in the 100 and 200 meters are 10.41 and 21.05.
At Potomac High School, Darby won the 100 and 200 outdoor track state championship in grades 10, 11, and 12. He was second in the 100 in the 3A state meet when in 9th grade.
He played all over the field in football, gaining 1,329 and 23 touchdowns as a running back in his 11th-grade year. Considered one of the top two cornerbacks in the country as a senior, Darby was a SI.com 2011 High School first team All-American.
