This is the second of what is a regular weekly feature on The Baltimore Wire of links to interesting Baltimore and Maryland sports stories on the web.

In the bowl of crab soup this week are these stories …

Here is a Steve Melewski (of MASN) article about the AFL Championship of the Surprise Saguaros – including eight of the Orioles prospects. This article quotes the manger Gary Kendall quite a bit, who is the Orioles AA Bowie manager. There is also a summary of the eight O’s prospects.  Ingredient 1

This article from my local paper by my good friend, sports writer, and running enthusiast Andy Mason tells the story of Pennsylvania resident Zach Miller who convincingly won the biggest and most prestigious ultramarathon. The JFK 50-miler was featured recently in an article on this web site. Zach Miller works on a cruise ship and has to do a lot of his training on a treadmill!  Ingredient 2

The UMD field hockey team lost 3-2 to Duke in the NCAA national semi-finals. The women have been in the final four for the past four seasons, and they were ACC champs for the 10th time. Their final season record was 22-2.  Ingredient 3

A lot of Orioles fans are unhappy about what appears to be a not-so-serious attempt to go after free agents to help get the club into a playoff picture. Some fans especially are concerned about the needs for a starting pitcher of the 200-innings variety. Yes, that would be nice, but, there is a larger picture involved in all of this that I’m probably more sensitive toward than the average baseball fan – by that, I’m speaking of the leadership reality that that there are surely complications behind the scenes that cannot be revealed, but would change the entire view of things. There is a view out there that Duquette is a dumpster diver.  Ingredient 4

The Navy football team is having a very successful season. They are now 7-4, having defeated San Jose State this past Friday evening by a score of 58-52. Quarterback Keenan Reynolds gained 240 yards on 36 carries, scoring seven rushing touchdowns! Yes – 7! Seven! Their next game is against Army – who is currently 3-7, with a game this Saturday in Hawaii.  Ingredient 5

Here is a piece on an interesting fact about the Ravens’ 23-20 loss to the Chicago Bears in overtime. Baltimore considered deferring and kicking off when they won the coin toss at the start of OT. This has never been done since the last modification of rules in the NFL.  Ingredient 6

Here is an article about how the French apparently have long thought Baltimore is not a safe place to visit … but that it is now safer. I was in Paris this Spring and did not think that Communist parade I stumbled upon was the safest environment I’ve ever experienced!   Ingredient 7
